What do headphone specs actually mean? Frequency response, impedance and driver size
What frequency response, impedance and driver size tell you about headphones, what they leave out, and how to judge whether you need an amplifier.

The short answer
Use headphone specifications to check compatibility, not to rank sound quality. A quoted frequency range does not show how evenly the headphone reproduces that range. Impedance needs to be read alongside sensitivity and the output of your source.
The comparison below includes published figures for studio headphones and gaming headsets, with wireless examples alongside them. Use the conditions beside each value; they can change what a comparison means.

What does frequency response actually tell you?
A measured frequency-response curve shows how output varies with frequency under the stated test conditions. That can help you understand tonal balance. The range printed as two endpoints is a different, much less detailed description.
A pair of frequency endpoints describes the stated range, not the level at each frequency. Sony MDR-7506 is an example: its published range does not by itself show whether the sound leans towards bass or treble.
A tolerance states how far the level may vary across the quoted range. Without that information, do not treat a wider range as evidence of a flatter response. A response curve gives you more detail, provided the measurements are comparable.
JBL Quantum ONE lists separate frequency ranges for active and passive operation. Keep those labels attached to the values when comparing it with another headphone.
What is impedance, and do you need a headphone amp?
Impedance is the electrical load a headphone presents to its source, expressed in ohms. The number is not a sound-quality score and does not, on its own, tell you whether an external amplifier is needed.
Sensitivity tells you the sound level produced for a specified input. Check its reference units before comparing two figures: a rating per volt is not directly interchangeable with one per milliwatt. Read it alongside impedance and the source’s output.
Leave room for musical peaks. A source that reaches your preferred average volume may still run out of headroom on a transient. Check output into the headphone’s load rather than buying an amplifier because an ohm number looks high.
You do not need a separate headphone amplifier for Bluetooth listening; the headphone handles amplification internally. For analogue wired listening, check the headphone’s sensitivity and impedance against the source’s output. If the source cannot provide the level you need without distortion, a suitable amplifier may help.
Does a bigger driver mean better sound?
No. Diameter is a physical dimension, not a sound-quality rating. Compare it within the context of the headphone’s design, and look for listening assessments or comparable measurements before treating it as a reason to buy.
An earbud and an over-ear headphone couple to your ear differently. Their driver diameters are not a like-for-like quality comparison.
Even within one wearing style, diameter does not describe the complete driver or the acoustic design around it. Use it as a hardware detail, not a ranking.
Which conditions matter when comparing headphone specs?
Compare the same operating mode and the same weight basis. Sony WH-1000XM6 has different published impedance values with power on and off when connected by its audio cable. That distinction belongs beside the number.
For weight, check what is included. A per-earbud figure excludes the charging case, while a headset figure may exclude its detachable microphone. The table labels those differences where the sources specify them.
If a value is missing or disputed, leave it out of a numerical comparison. That is a limit on the comparison, not evidence that the product lacks the feature.
What should you actually shop on instead?

If possible, try the fit and sound before committing, or check the return policy. A specification sheet cannot tell you whether you will enjoy wearing and listening to a particular pair.

Common questions
- What is a good frequency response for headphones?
A frequency range alone is not a quality target. Look for the stated tolerance or comparable response measurements if you want to understand how output varies across the range.
- Do I need a headphone amplifier?
Not for Bluetooth listening. For analogue wired listening, it depends on the headphone’s sensitivity and impedance, together with the source’s output. There is no useful impedance-only threshold for deciding this.
An amplifier needs enough headroom for musical peaks as well as the average listening level. Check the source’s output into the relevant load instead of buying an amp because the headphone has a high impedance number.
- Does a higher impedance mean better headphones?
No, and Shure says so directly on its own specifications page: a high ohms number does not mean it will sound better, it simply means that each headphone is suitable for a certain device or application.
Check the source and headphone together. The headphone’s sensitivity matters as well as its impedance, so a high ohm rating alone is not a reason to buy an amplifier.
- Are bigger drivers better in headphones?
No. A larger diameter does not by itself establish better sound. Compare the complete design and use listening assessments or comparable measurements to judge performance.
- What should I do if a headphone specification is missing?
Check the manufacturer’s technical documentation for the exact model. If the value or its measurement conditions cannot be verified, leave it out of your numerical comparison.
- So what should I compare headphones on?
Start with the fit you need and the noise you want to keep out. Then check compatibility with your devices. Use the specifications to narrow the options, not to declare a winner without listening evidence.
Check fit and sound before committing where possible, and read the return policy. Specifications help narrow the choice; they do not guarantee that a particular headphone will suit you.
