Audio-Technica ATH-GL3

Audio-Technica ATH-GL3

Is the ATH-GL3 right for you?

The ATH-GL3 is Audio-Technica's closed-back, over-ear gaming headset, and it connects by one of two detachable 3.5 mm cables.

Best for

  • Playing on consoles and a PC with one headset. Audio-Technica lists it as compatible with PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, laptops and PCs.
  • Game chat with a mic you can take off. Audio-Technica lists a detachable boom microphone.

Skip if

  • You want a well-cushioned headband. Reviewers found the headband poorly padded or not cushioned at all.
  • You want to go wireless. Audio-Technica describes the ATH-GL3 as a wired gaming headset.

What does it cost, and what should you check first?

Prices change; check the one for the colour you want. Audio-Technica's product page lists it in Black and White. Both cables end in 3.5 mm plugs, so a phone or laptop with only USB-C ports needs an adapter.

Audio-Technica says the left earcup has a built-in volume control dial and a mute switch. Its US warranty runs two years from date of purchase, for one bought in the U.S.A. from an authorized Audio-Technica dealer.

What do the ATH-GL3's two cables plug into?

The 1.2 m cable in the box ends in a single 4-pole 3.5 mm plug; the 3.0 m one, which Audio-Technica calls the cable for PC, has two 3-pole plugs. A 4-pole plug carries headphone sound and the microphone together, as a single headset jack expects; two 3-pole plugs suit a computer with separate microphone and headphone jacks. Audio-Technica's compatibility list covers both: a standard 3.5 mm TRRS headset jack (the 4-pole kind), or separate microphone input and headphone output jacks.

Audio-Technica lists 45 mm dynamic drivers rated at 45 ohms. Impedance is the electrical load a headphone puts on the jack it's plugged into, not a sound-quality score. What those figures do and don't tell you is covered in our guide: What do headphone specs actually mean? Frequency response, impedance and driver size.

What do reviewers say?

On the headband, one review found no cushioning; another found the padding poor. On the build, one review found it felt slightly fragile; another found the plastic creaks.
