Is the MDR-7506 right for you?

The MDR-7506 is a closed, over-ear headphone that Sony sells as a professional model, and it connects by a 9.8 ft cord.

Best for

  • Plugging into a small or a full-size headphone jack. Sony lists a gold Stereo Unimatch plug, and says a gold-plated Unimatch 3.5mm/6.3mm adaptor comes in the box.
  • Packing it away. Sony's brochure lists it as folding, and Sony's specifications page lists a carrying pouch in the box.

Skip if

  • You want to go wireless. The connection Sony lists is a Unimatch plug on a 9.8 ft cord.
  • You want a straight cable. Sony's brochure describes the cord as 3m / Coiled.

What does it cost, and what should you check first?

Prices change, so check the current one before you buy. A 1/8" plug is the 3.5 mm size, and 1/4" is the larger 6.3 mm size. A 3.5 mm plug doesn't fit a phone or laptop that has only USB-C ports without an adapter.

What do the MDR-7506's driver and impedance figures tell you?

Sony lists a 40 mm dynamic driver, dome type, and a frequency response of 10-20,000 Hz. Dynamic drivers are the moving-coil kind.

Sony's own pages disagree on impedance: its UK specifications page lists 24 ohm (1KHz), and its Sony Pro product page lists 63 Ohms. Impedance is the electrical load a headphone puts on the jack it's plugged into, not a sound-quality score. What driver size, impedance and frequency response figures do and don't tell you is covered in our guide: What do headphone specs actually mean? Frequency response, impedance and driver size.
