Audio-Technica ATH-M50xBT2

Is the ATH-M50xBT2 right for you?
The ATH-M50xBT2 is a closed-back, over-ear Bluetooth headphone, with a cable in the box for listening wired.
Best for
- Long days away from a charger. Audio-Technica quotes about 50 hours per charge, and up to 3 hours from a 10-minute top-up.
- People who switch between a phone and a laptop. It stays connected to two Bluetooth devices at once.
Skip if
- You want noise cancelling. Audio-Technica's product page and user manual don't list active noise cancelling.
- You'd plug it into a phone with no headphone jack. The audio cable in the box ends in a 3.5 mm plug, so you'd need an adapter.
Want to see it next to a keyboard and a mouse? Try it on the QuickDesker board and build a whole desk setup around it.

Prices change, so check the current one before you buy. Note that the charging cable in the box is 30 cm long, USB-A to USB-C, so a laptop with only USB-C ports needs a different cable or an adapter to charge it from. The box also holds a 1.2 m audio cable and a pouch.
Audio-Technica says the earcup buttons handle volume and mute, music and calls, and reach Alexa, Google Assistant or Siri. The warranty is a one-year limited one.
How long does the battery last?
Audio-Technica quotes about 50 hours of continuous use per charge, and up to 3 hours from a 10-minute charge over USB-C. A full charge takes about 3.5 hours. Two reviews measured more than that. One measured more than 60 hours of continuous playback; another measured 64 hours and 51 minutes of constant playback, and called it one of the best results it had seen.
What do you get over Bluetooth, and on the cable?
It uses Bluetooth 5.0 with the LDAC, AAC and SBC codecs. A codec is how the music is compressed for the wireless link: LDAC is a high-bitrate one that many Android phones support, while iPhones use AAC. A low-latency mode, switched on in Audio-Technica's A-T Connect app, is meant to keep sound in step with video and games. For wired listening there's the 1.2 m cable.
Inside are 45 mm dynamic drivers rated at 38 ohms, which Audio-Technica says give it the same sonic signature as the wired ATH-M50x studio headphones. What those numbers mean is covered in What do headphone specs actually mean? Frequency response, impedance and driver size
