ABS vs PBT keycaps: what actually changes, and what the box will not tell you

One plastic goes shiny sooner and one costs more. What that difference is worth, why the legend method matters more than the material, and why most keyboards never say which they used.

The short answer

ABS and PBT are two plastics keycaps get moulded from, and the practical difference is wear. ABS is softer and cheaper to mould, and the keys you touch most develop a glossy patch after enough hours. PBT is denser and harder to work, so it goes there more slowly and more evenly. Glorious, which sells both, is refreshingly blunt that PBT does not last forever either; it just takes meaningfully longer to get there.

The thing nobody mentions is how rarely you get told. Some boards state a keycap material and plenty say nothing at all, and price is no guide to which group a board falls into: an expensive board will often publish nothing, while a budget one sometimes names ABS outright.

What are ABS and PBT, and why do keycaps use them?

Both are injection-moulding plastics, and the choice between them is a manufacturing decision before it is anything else. ABS is acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, the same family of plastic used for Lego bricks. It flows nicely into a mould, holds fine detail, takes colour well and is cheap, which is why Glorious describes it as the default on entry-level boards and CORSAIR calls it the material most keycaps are made from.

PBT is polybutylene terephthalate. It is denser and more rigid, and Das Keyboard notes that its stiffness makes shaping it complicated and the tooling expensive, with a mould that only serves one keycap design. That cost is most of why PBT sets carry a premium, and Glorious says the same thing from the other side: PBT is simply harder to injection-mould.

One point of confusion worth clearing up before it bites you. ABS is also a common material for keyboard cases, and some boards publish an ABS plastic case while saying nothing about their keycaps. Those are the same polymer doing two unrelated jobs. A board with an aluminium case can still have ABS keycaps, and a board with an ABS case can still have PBT ones.

Which one goes shiny first, and how long does that take?

ABS, and nobody will tell you how long. All three manufacturers read for this page agree on the direction: CORSAIR says ABS develops a shiny appearance over time with legends becoming worn and illegible, Das Keyboard says the same about wear and fading, and Glorious names the mechanism as glossy wear from repeated friction. None of them publishes an hour count, a keystroke count or anything else you could plan around, and we are not going to invent one.

Where it appears is more useful than when. Glorious is specific: the spacebar first, then the WASD cluster, then the home row. That is a description of your own hands rather than of the plastic, and it explains why two people can wear the same board completely differently. Someone who games hard will polish four keys into a mirror while the rest of the board looks new. A touch typist will do the home row and leave the number pad pristine.

PBT slows this down and does not stop it. CORSAIR's framing is that PBT wears more slowly and the pattern of wear is more even, which is a nicer property than it sounds: a board that gets slightly glossy everywhere reads as used, and a board with four mirror-finished keys reads as broken. Glorious goes further and says outright that the claim PBT never shows wear is false. A manufacturer contradicting its own product category's marketing is worth more than a hundred forum posts.

Do the two plastics feel different under your fingers?

By every account, yes, and this is where we have to stop and say what we cannot do. Not one keycap on this page has been under a fingertip belonging to anybody who works here, so what follows is what three manufacturers say about their own products.

They describe it consistently. ABS is the slicker of the two: Das Keyboard calls it a slick feel and Glorious calls it smoother under the fingers. PBT is the textured one, described by CORSAIR as a slightly rougher surface finish and by Das Keyboard as silky or smooth but not slippery, sometimes with a grain to it. Glorious adds that grain is a quality question rather than a material one, since a good PBT set has a satisfying amount of texture and a bad one is just coarse.

Whether you prefer texture is not something anyone can settle for you, including a review. It is the same class of question as whether you like a tactile bump, and it gets the same honest answer: preferences about touch do not survive being read about. Do PBT keycaps sound better?

This is the claim to distrust, and the reason is that the manufacturers do not agree with each other. Das Keyboard says PBT produces a deeper, crisper, less tinny sound, and then says PBT keycaps are generally louder and clearer than ABS. Glorious says PBT is slightly louder with a crisper, more rigid sound and calls ABS quieter and smoother. CORSAIR only offers that ABS has inferior acoustic properties without saying in what direction.

Read those together and the single point two independent sources agree on is that PBT is a bit louder. Everything else diverges, including the popular enthusiast shorthand that runs the opposite way from Das Keyboard's own page, holding that ABS is the deeper sound and PBT the higher, sharper one. When the people who manufacture the product cannot describe it the same way twice, that is a signal about how much of this is measurable and how much is vocabulary.

There is also a scale problem. On most boards the loudest single event is a keycap bottoming out, and that noise is shaped by the case, any foam inside it, the stabilisers under the big keys and how hard you hit the keys, all of which sit between the keycap and your ear. A keycap material is one contributor to a sound with at least four other authors. If quiet is an actual requirement rather than a nice-to-have, the material is nowhere near the first thing to change.

How are the letters put on, and will they rub off?

Three methods, and this decides more about your keyboard's future than the plastic does. Double-shot moulds the keycap from two pieces of plastic, one forming the body and one forming the legend, so the letter runs through the cap rather than sitting on it. Glorious describes the legend as part of the keycap itself rather than something on its surface, which is why a double-shot legend resists the surface wear that eventually takes a printed one off.

Dye-sublimation takes the second route: heat and pressure drive dye into the plastic itself, colouring it rather than coating it. Glorious rates both as highly durable, gives double-shot a slight edge, and notes one physical difference between them: dye-sub leaves no raised bump where the legend is, and double-shot does.

Then there is printing, and printing loses. Pad-printed and laser-etched legends sit on top of the surface, and Glorious says plainly that they wear off with use. Das Keyboard makes the same point about printed legends fading from finger contact and light. So the sentence that actually matters when you are looking at a keycap set is not which plastic, it is which of these three, and a double-shot ABS set will keep its letters longer than a pad-printed PBT one.

Both plastics take both of the good methods. Glorious moulds double-shot in ABS and in PBT and sells a dye-sublimated PBT line beside them, which is the cleanest evidence that material and legend method are independent choices rather than a package deal.

Why does my keyboard not say which plastic it uses?

Because saying so is marketing, and there is nothing to gain by advertising the cheaper option. What a spec sheet shows you is disclosure rather than the market: PBT is a thing worth putting on a spec sheet, ABS is the default, and silence usually means the default.

We record silence as silence rather than converting it into a no, which is the same rule the rest of this site runs on, and it is why the table below shows several boards as not published rather than as ABS. It would be a reasonable guess. It would not be a fact, and being less useful beats being wrong.

Price will not stand in for the answer either. A board near the top of a maker's range can say nothing at all while a budget one states ABS outright, so if you were using price as a proxy for what the keycaps are made of, stop.

Is it worth buying a replacement keycap set?

Only after you have checked that it fits, and fitment has nothing to do with the plastic. A set has to match your board's bottom row, its switch stems and its stabilisers, and a compact or squeezed layout is exactly where a standard set leaves you with four keys you cannot replace. Once it does fit, replacing keycaps is the cheapest way to change how a keyboard looks and one of the cheapest ways to change how it sounds, without touching anything electrical. It is also completely reversible, unlike most of the other things people do to keyboards.

Our own advice on the material, for what it is worth: buy for the legend method first, the fit second and the plastic third. A double-shot set in either material will outlive the keyboard. The bottom three rows publish no keycap material, and they are not cheap boards. The case column is there to head off a common mix-up: ABS is a normal material for a keyboard case as well as for keycaps, and a board can use it for one and not the other.

Common questions

Are PBT keycaps better than ABS?

Better at resisting wear, which is the difference everyone means. CORSAIR describes PBT as more robust, wearing more slowly and more evenly than ABS, and Das Keyboard and Glorious agree on the direction. PBT also costs more, because it is harder to injection-mould and the tooling is expensive.

For everything else it is preference. PBT is the more textured of the two and ABS the slicker, and neither is objectively nicer to touch. Double-shot and dye-sublimated legends are durable, but neither method is a promise that the cap will remain unchanged indefinitely.

How long does it take ABS keycaps to go shiny?

There is no reliable month-count that applies to every ABS keycap and typing habit. What manufacturers do describe is where it starts: Glorious names the spacebar first, then the WASD cluster, then the home row, which means the answer depends on your hands rather than on a number of months.

Someone who games on four keys for hours will see it far sooner than someone who types across the whole board. PBT slows the process rather than preventing it; Glorious says outright that the idea PBT never shows wear is false.

Do PBT keycaps sound different from ABS?

Manufacturers say yes and then describe it differently, which is a good reason to hold the claim loosely. Das Keyboard calls PBT deeper, crisper and less tinny, and also louder. Glorious calls PBT slightly louder with a crisper, more rigid sound and ABS quieter and smoother. The popular enthusiast description runs the opposite way from Das Keyboard's on the question of which is deeper.

Two of those sources agree that PBT is a little louder and that is about the extent of the consensus. In any case the keycap is one small contributor next to the case, the foam, the stabilisers and how hard you type.

What are double-shot keycaps?

Keycaps moulded from two pieces of plastic, one making the body and one making the letter, so the legend runs through the cap instead of sitting on its surface. The legend is part of the moulding rather than a surface print, so ordinary surface wear is less likely to erase it.

The alternative that lasts is dye-sublimation, where heat and pressure drive dye into the plastic. Both are durable. Pad-printed and laser-etched legends are the ones that wear away, and Glorious says so plainly.

Why do so few keyboards state their keycap material?

Because publishing it is a selling point only when the answer is PBT. A spec sheet shows you what a vendor chose to advertise rather than what the market is made of, so silence is weak evidence either way.

We record an unstated material as unstated rather than assuming the cheaper option, so a board showing "Not recorded" here has not been marked down. It just has not said.

Can I put PBT keycaps on any mechanical keyboard?

Only if the set fits the board, and the material has no bearing on that. What has to match is the bottom row layout, the switch stem and the stabilisers under the larger keys. Compact and squeezed layouts are where a standard set most often falls short.

What this is based on

We have not tested these products. The comparisons use manufacturer specifications and retailer information, with sources linked below. Prices are dated snapshots and may have changed.

The material descriptions come from three manufacturers' own published explainers, read on 2026-08-26: Das Keyboard, CORSAIR and Glorious. They agree independently that ABS is softer, cheaper to mould and prone to a glossy patch where it is touched most, and that PBT is denser, more expensive to tool, more textured and slower to show wear. Glorious's statement that PBT does not resist wear forever, and its list of where shine appears first, are quoted because they are a manufacturer correcting the marketing of a category it sells into.

The sound claim is deliberately left unresolved on this page, because the three sources do not agree with each other or with the widely repeated enthusiast description. Two of them agree only that PBT is somewhat louder. Where sources diverge, the divergence is the more honest thing to write about than a winner.

The legend-method descriptions are Glorious's own, from its double-shot explainer and its material comparison, which is a useful source here because Glorious manufactures double-shot, dye-sublimated and pad-printed sets and describes all three.

There is no set of keycaps on this desk and never has been. Nothing on this page reports how a keycap feels or sounds in a room; it is what each manufacturer publishes, and nothing more.

What each board states about its keycaps is taken from that manufacturer's own specification page. A board that states nothing is recorded as stating nothing rather than assumed to be ABS.
