Ambidextrous vs. contoured-right mice: which hand is yours shaped for?
Choose a mouse by its shell and button placement. Compare right-handed contours with symmetrical designs, including gaming mice you can configure for either hand.
Updated 31 Aug 2026 · no hands-on testing
The short answer
Check the shell and the controls separately. A symmetrical mouse can still put its thumb buttons on the left side for a right-handed user. A vertical grip does not tell you which hand a mouse is built for.
For left-handed gaming, compare Logitech G PRO 2 LIGHTSPEED and CORSAIR M75 WIRELESS: both let you configure the side buttons for either hand. If you want a vertical grip, select the left-handed version of Logitech Lift Vertical Ergonomic Mouse.
The picks
Cheapest ambidextrous option
$9.99 seen 16 Aug 2026; check the current price
A symmetrical shape, and the least expensive mouse on this page. It was seen at $9.99 on 16 Aug 2026; check the current price. No side buttons to worry about being on the wrong side.

$119.99 seen 16 Aug 2026; check the current price
This one has a symmetrical shell, but its side buttons are positioned for a right-handed thumb. Do not choose it for left-handed gaming on the shell shape alone.

$69.99 seen 16 Aug 2026; check the current price
A right-handed contoured gaming mouse. Check its dimensions against your hand and grip before buying.

$79.99 seen 16 Aug 2026; check the current price
A low-profile-flat shape, distinct from both contoured-right and the rounder ambidextrous shells above. It was seen at $79.99 on 16 Aug 2026; check the current price. Symmetrical enough for either hand, but not shaped like either category.

How do you tell which hand a mouse is shaped for?
Check the manufacturer’s handedness description, then look at the shell and side-button placement. A symmetrical outline does not guarantee that every control is equally convenient in both hands.
Check handedness on vertical mice and trackballs too. Their unusual shape does not make left-versus-right fit irrelevant.
How do right-handed and symmetrical mouse shapes differ?
A right-handed contour is shaped around the right hand; a symmetrical shell mirrors its outline across the centre. The controls are a separate check. Razer Viper V3 Pro has a symmetrical shell and right-handed controls, while CORSAIR M75 WIRELESS lets you configure its side buttons for either hand.
What is an ambidextrous mouse for?
An ambidextrous mouse is intended to work in either hand. Logitech G PRO 2 LIGHTSPEED and CORSAIR M75 WIRELESS let you change the side-button arrangement to suit the hand you use. A symmetrical outline without that control arrangement may still be inconvenient left-handed.
Can you buy a left-handed mouse?
Yes. Logitech Lift Vertical Ergonomic Mouse comes in a dedicated left-handed version. For a conventional gaming shape, Logitech G PRO 2 LIGHTSPEED and CORSAIR M75 WIRELESS support left- or right-handed side-button arrangements.
Choose the left-handed Logitech Lift Vertical Ergonomic Mouse if you want a vertical grip. Compare Logitech G PRO 2 LIGHTSPEED and CORSAIR M75 WIRELESS if you want a conventional gaming mouse with configurable side buttons. Check the exact model name before ordering.
Which mice fit neither shape?
Three of them, across two shape categories. Logitech M325S is a compact travel shape, smaller than either the contoured or ambidextrous shells and built to go in a bag. Logitech Pebble Mouse 2 M350s and Apple Magic Mouse (USB-C) are both low-profile-flat, a genuinely different silhouette from either of the two main shapes: flatter, with no raised palm rest at all.

Check the shell and hand orientation separately. A missing handedness value is a gap in this comparison, not confirmation that the mouse works equally well in both hands.

Common questions
- If I'm left-handed, what are my options?
For a conventional gaming mouse, compare Logitech G PRO 2 LIGHTSPEED and CORSAIR M75 WIRELESS. Both support side-button arrangements for either hand. For a vertical grip, select the left-handed version of Logitech Lift Vertical Ergonomic Mouse.
- Is 'ergonomic' the same as 'ambidextrous'?
No. “Ambidextrous” describes use in either hand. An ergonomic design may still be made specifically for a left or right hand; check the exact model and controls.
- Does a contoured shape fit better than an ambidextrous one?
A spec sheet can't answer that: it's a question about how a shape feels in a specific hand, and none of these has been held here. What the specs do give you is which shape each product states and for which hand, and how to measure your own hand against that is covered in Palm, claw or fingertip: which mouse grip do you use, and does it matter?
What this is based on
We have not tested these products. The comparisons use manufacturer specifications and retailer information, with sources linked below. Prices are dated snapshots and may have changed.
The linked sources describe each model’s shape and controls. Check the selected version before ordering, especially where left- and right-handed models are sold separately.
Not one of these mice has been held by anyone working on the site. This article reports what's published about shape and hand orientation, and not which shape is more comfortable.
