Can wired headphones have noise cancelling? Yes, but something has to power them

Cancellation runs on electricity, and the audio cable is not the only place electricity can come from. What that means for the pairs that cancel over USB, and for the ones that cancel over a plain analogue lead.

The short answer

Yes, and the constraint is power rather than the connector. Active cancellation is a powered process: microphones outside the earcup sample the room and a chip generates the opposing waveform. That needs a live supply, and a 3.5 mm plug does not carry one. So the power arrives another way, and there are two ways it does. A USB cable brings it alongside the audio. Or the headphone carries a battery, in which case the audio cable can be ordinary analogue and the cancellation runs off the battery anyway.

Both routes turn up here, though only one of them is sold as a wired product. JBL Quantum ONE and Belkin SoundForm ANC Wired Earbuds (USB-C) take their power from USB, with no battery and no radio in either. The JBL was seen at $99.99 on 16 Aug 2026; check the current price. JBL lists it with both a USB-A and a 3.5 mm connection, and describes the cancellation as available over the USB one. That is the pure version of the USB route: power and audio down the same cable, nothing stored inside.

    Bose puts a 3.5 mm to 2.5 mm audio cable in the box, and its own support answer says that without power the headphones drop to passive mode and neither the cancellation nor the EQ will run. Why does noise cancelling need power at all?

Because it has to generate sound rather than block it. Microphones on the outside of the earcup sample the sound around you, and circuitry inside generates a waveform that is the inverse of it, so the two largely cancel where your eardrum is. Steady, repetitive noise (an engine, a fan, air conditioning) is what this handles well, because it is predictable enough to invert.

All of that needs a live supply, and nothing says the audio cable has to be what provides it. A 3.5 mm plug has no power rail on it: the contacts carry an analogue left channel, a right channel, a ground, and on a four-pole plug a microphone. There is nothing there to run a chip off. A USB cable is a different proposition, because power is one of the things it was built to carry. A battery in the earcup is the other answer, and it is the one the market actually took. So the rule is a battery or a powered cable, and once a battery is in there, adding Bluetooth costs almost nothing and removes the cable people were trying to escape. That is why the category drifted wireless. It is not the same as saying an analogue cable cannot carry cancelled audio, and that is the step where the shorthand goes wrong: a battery-powered headphone with a 3.5 mm socket goes on cancelling when you plug the cable in.

Which headphones cancel over a cable?

Four on this page, and they split by where the power comes from. Two run on USB and nothing else. JBL Quantum ONE is a USB gaming headset: 50 mm drivers, 32 ohms, a detachable boom mic, and JBL's QuantumENGINE software. It is the only headphone here that publishes an impedance figure at all, which tells you a good deal about how thin these spec sheets run, and what that number is actually for is covered in What do headphone specs actually mean? Its spec sheet also quotes two frequency response ranges, one passive and one active, which is itself a tell that the cancellation is a powered mode rather than a marketing word. Ours was seen at $99.99 on 16 Aug 2026; check the current price. That figure was discounted steeply from list, so treat it with more suspicion than most on this site.

Belkin SoundForm ANC Wired Earbuds (USB-C) does the same trick at a much lower price and a much smaller size: USB-C in-ears with active cancellation, an IPX5 rating and nothing to charge. It is the only wired cancelling earbud on this page.

The other two are the ones the wireless label hides. Bose QuietComfort Headphones and Sony WH-1000XM6 each ship a cable ending in an ordinary analogue plug, and each goes on cancelling while charged. Sony states it directly in its own help guide for that model: you can use the headset as noise-cancelling headphones while it is connected by the supplied cable and turned on, and with the headset off the cancelling function is unavailable. Bose reaches the same place from the other direction, warning that without power its headphones operate in passive mode and neither cancellation nor Active EQ can function.

Both analogue modes have been recorded on this site all along. Each is labelled wireless because that is how it is sold, and the label describes the sale rather than the hardware. Reading one as a statement of what a product can do is how people end up believing a cancelling headphone with a cable is not a thing.

Neither USB entry has anything comparable beside it here, and that is a thin basis for a recommendation. A product with no rival on the page cannot be checked against one, and if it goes out of production there is no second choice waiting behind it.

What gets sold as noise cancelling but isn't?

Three things, and one of them is likely to catch you on this page. A noise-cancelling microphone is the dangerous one: it cleans up what the person on the other end of your call hears and does precisely nothing for the wearer. HyperX Cloud III is marketed on that, and this site files it as no cancellation at all for exactly that reason. If you are shopping for a wired headset, this is the label you will run into most.

The other two are passive isolation, where a sealed cup or a deep tip blocks sound with no power involved and which Audio-Technica ATH-M50x claims explicitly, and a transparency mode, which pipes the room in on purpose. Neither one is cancellation. Both get taken apart properly in What “noise cancelling” actually means on a headphone box.

Why do people think wired headphones can't cancel?

Partly because the shorthand is nearly right, and partly because the labelling is a mess. Cancellation does need power, an analogue plug does not carry any, and nearly everything here that cancels is sold as wireless. Put those together and "wired cancelling does not exist" is an easy place to land. It still does not follow. A USB cable carries power, and a battery does not care what the audio cable happens to be.

The labelling can be wrong at the source, too. JBL's own headphone category listing reports JBL Quantum ONE as having no active cancelling, while its product page for the same model says it has it and puts the cancellation on the USB connection. Two pages from one manufacturer, disagreeing about the feature the product is bought for.

So the shopping lesson is about where you read a spec, not just which spec you read. A category or comparison listing is the quick way to see a whole range at once, and it is the least reliable place for the one claim you are actually buying on. Check the individual product page before you rely on anything.

What should you buy if you want a cable and quiet?

You have more routes than the wired label suggests, and the one most people miss is a battery-powered cancelling headphone used with its cable. Bose QuietComfort Headphones and Sony WH-1000XM6 both do this, both keep the radio for the days you would rather not have a lead trailing off your head, and both are ordinary Bluetooth headphones the rest of the time.

Skipping the power altogether is the other answer. A sealed closed-back over-ear blocks noise mechanically and needs nothing at all: Sony MDR-7506 and Audio-Technica ATH-M50x are both here, both closed, and each folds down for a bag.

Or take the trade the market made and accept the radio. Soundcore Q30 and Soundcore Space One cancel for less than the wired over-ear option here, and each comes with a cable in the box for when the battery dies.

One category genuinely does still build cancelling headphones around a cable: aviation headsets, which are powered, cabled, and made to cancel a piston engine for hours. They cost four figures, they are flight equipment, and we do not carry them for a desk-setup site.

Compare the connection column against the tag beside it. The first two products cancel on USB power with nothing stored inside; the next two cancel off a battery and list a 3.5 mm mode as well, which is why the wireless tag on them describes how they are sold rather than what they can do. HyperX Cloud III is here because it is the one most often assumed to belong in the first group: it has a noise-cancelling microphone, a different feature aimed at a different person.

Common questions

Why do almost all noise-cancelling headphones use Bluetooth?

Because cancellation already forces you to add a power source, and once a battery is in the earcup, a Bluetooth radio adds very little cost or weight while removing the cable. The engineering decision that makes ANC possible is the same one that makes the cable optional.

Does noise cancelling work over a 3.5 mm cable?

On a headphone with its own battery, yes, provided you turn it on. Sony's help guide for Sony WH-1000XM6 says you can use it as a noise-cancelling headphone while connected by the supplied cable with the headset powered, and that the function is unavailable with the headset off. Bose describes the same behaviour for Bose QuietComfort Headphones from the other side, noting that without power it falls back to passive.

On a headphone with no battery, no. The cancellation has nothing to run on, which is why JBL Quantum ONE puts its cancellation on the USB connection and not the analogue one.

Is a noise-cancelling microphone the same as noise cancelling?

No, and they are close to opposites in terms of who benefits. A noise-cancelling microphone filters background noise out of your outgoing voice so the person on the other end of the call hears you and not your keyboard. You hear no difference.

HyperX Cloud III is the clean example: it is marketed on a noise-cancelling mic, and we file it as having no ANC.

Do closed-back headphones block noise without ANC?

Yes, though differently. A sealed cup or a well-fitted in-ear tip physically blocks sound, which works best on higher frequencies: voices, keyboards, clatter. Active cancellation works best on low, steady sound like engine and fan noise. They are complementary rather than substitutes, which is why cancelling over-ears are usually closed-back too.

Audio-Technica ATH-M50x and Audio-Technica ATH-M50xBT2 are the only two here where the manufacturer makes the isolation claim explicitly.

Are there other wired ANC headphones you have not listed?

Plenty, and saying so is more useful than implying this page is the market. There is a whole battery-powered analogue lineage that a page like this usually leaves out: Bose's QuietComfort 25 and Audio-Technica's ATH-ANC7 each run their cancellation off a single AAA cell while the audio arrives down an ordinary analogue lead, and both makers note that the headphone keeps passing audio passively once that cell is flat.

What we found among current listings was a lot of unbranded marketplace entries, which we will not recommend, plus aviation headsets, which are genuinely wired, genuinely cancelling, and priced and built as flight equipment.

We have not tested these products. The comparisons use manufacturer specifications and retailer information, with sources linked below. Prices are dated snapshots and may have changed.

This article rests on manufacturer product pages and specification sheets for each headphone named, plus retailer listings where a price or a customer rating was needed. Every one is linked below with the date it was read. None of these has been worn by anyone working on this site, so there are no listening impressions here and no claims about how well the cancellation works.

Sony's help guide for Sony WH-1000XM6 states that the cancelling function is available over the supplied headphone cable with the headset turned on; Bose's support answer for Bose QuietComfort Headphones states that without power the headphones operate in passive mode and cancellation cannot function; and Bose and Audio-Technica each publish a battery-powered analogue cancelling headphone with a AAA cell listed in the box. These examples show that ANC needs power; an analogue audio cable does not prevent a separate battery from supplying it.

For these comparisons, ANC means powered cancellation of sound reaching the wearer’s ears. Microphone noise reduction is a separate feature.

Neither USB entry has a comparable product here to be read against, because each is the only one of its kind here. Read the picks as what they are, the products we could find and verify, rather than as a ranked survey of a large field.
